Buying your first car can feel like a huge undertaking. From choosing the right model to finding one within your budget, the decisions you make along the way may help ensure you buy a car that’s right for you. We’ve got a few tips to help you buy with confidence.
Know what you’re looking for
Before you start your search, take some time to think about why you need the car and what you’ll be using it for. This will help you buy one that suits your lifestyle. For example, if you plan on using your car for your daily commute, you may want a small, fuel-efficient model, like a hybrid or electric vehicle (EV). If you’ll be driving it to scenic surf spots with friends at the weekend, you may want to consider a larger model with a bigger boot.
Settle on a budget
How much money do you want to spend on a car? Your budget will determine what type of car you can afford, but also whether you buy it new or used. It’s worth considering the ongoing costs of a car, such as fuel consumption, maintenance, insurance premiums, as well as the excess payment per event, which is the amount you pay when you make a claim. It’s important to note that the highest applicable excess payable under the policy will apply if you need to make a claim on your car insurance. The type of excess payable can relate to factors including age and driving experience, such as:
Inexperienced driver/rider excess, which applies to drivers who are 25 or over and have less than 2 years driving experience
Under 25 excess, which applies to drivers who are under 25 and listed on the policy.
Unlisted Under 25 excess, which applies to drivers who are under 25 and not listed on the policy.
At AA Insurance, we have an open driver policy which means that unless special terms have been applied to your policy, any licenced driver who has your permission to drive your car may be automatically covered, provided they don't have any unacceptable traffic or criminal convictions, unacceptable claims and accidents and comply with our policy conditions and any applicable licence conditions they may have. Please see your policy document for more information on all policy conditions that you and your drivers must comply with.
Research the safety rating
Safety is an important consideration when you’re choosing a car. Safety ratings exist for new and used cars and are the best indication of how the vehicle would perform in a crash. They range from 1 to 5 stars - the more stars, the likely the safer the car. You can find more information about the different types of safety ratings and the rating of different vehicles on the Rightcar website.
Pay attention to detail
Once you’ve found a model that’s right for you, head over to a dealership. Inspect the inside and outside of the car, particularly if it’s a used model. For example, have a look to see if there is any damage or rust. Check the paintwork, doors, glass and tyres for damage or wear and tear. Look for signs of leaks on the floor and check under the bonnet that the car’s oil and coolant are clean. When it comes to the inside of the car, test that the lights and controls are operational, check all the seatbelts, chairs and mirrors, ensuring they work and can be adjusted.
Take it for a test drive
If you’re satisfied with the inside and outside of the vehicle, a test drive can help you get a feel for the car. Do the controls suit you? How is the steering? Are the brakes responsive? Check that the handbrake holds the car in place and that the pedal doesn’t go right to the floor. If it’s a used car, pay attention to unexpected noises, vibrations or smells as these could be indicative of a mechanical issue.
Do your due diligence
Before you commit to buying a car, it may pay to take it for a Pre-Purchase Inspection. The AA Pre-Purchase Inspection can give you an indication of the overall condition of the vehicle and reveal things that need further investigation. If you’re buying privately, you can find out about the history of the car with the AA Vehicle History Check which could also indicate whether there is any security or police interest on the car. These checks can help you understand what you’re buying and may protect you from facing unexpected costs once you’ve made the purchase.
