With the nights getting longer and colder, snuggling up in a warm cosy bed at the end of each day can be bliss. But sadly, this isn’t an option for many children in New Zealand with one in 10 Kiwi kids in our poorest communities going without a warm bed to call their own. These children often sleep on the floor or co-share a bed, meaning they don’t have their own place to relax, recharge or dream. They are also at greater risk of illness and hospital admission.
Our partner Variety – the Children's Charity is doing amazing work to help these children and has recently launched its Warm Hearts Winter Appeal with the aim of fundraising $400,000 to help 1,100 young Kiwis receive a bed and bedding pack of their own through their Beds for Kids programme. Since launching three weeks ago, the campaign has already raised $81,000 to help those in need.
At AA Insurance we’re committed to helping Variety in its mission to help young New Zealanders thrive and are supporting the appeal by providing 100 bedding packs that will help keep Kiwi kids warm and well this winter.
These beds and bedding packs make a huge difference to children like Derek, who was helped by Variety last year. Derek’s mum described how having a bed of his own improved his mental and physical wellbeing, which has helped him participate better at school :
“The team at Variety has been amazing; they have given my child a nice new bed that keeps him off the ground, he is warm, and his health has improved. He has more energy in the morning and is able concentrate on tasks at school,” she says.
